Lyrics

Jesus, you’re the morning star
Oh how beautiful you are
You came down from heav’n above
To show us the Father’s love
Jesus you’re the morning star
Oh how beautiful you are

Story behind the song

Ask anyone what their favourite lullaby is (or nursery rhyme) and chances are that Twinkle Twinkle Little Star will come up frequently. Ask them who wrote it, and fewer people may know the origin of the lyrics (English – Jane Taylor) or music (French – arranged by many, including Mozart)

Around 20 years ago, from time to time I would be asked to do songs with babies and toddlers, usually in the context of church creches and toddler clubs. I wrote some alternative lyrics to Twinkle Twinkle, based on the verse in Revelation: “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star” (Rev. 22:16)

In 2000, ICC Records/Daybreak Music (who were our publisher and distributor at that time) kindly picked up the song for a Lullaby album. Until now, we’d never recorded our own version, and in many ways, this was the song that provided the initial inspiration to write an album of lullabies.

There is much excitement around the world at present about the great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, that was at its closest on Dec 21, 2020, and speculation that the conjunction could have been what guided the Wise Men at the nativity, the “Bethlehem Star”. Whether or not that is true, it is certainly our prayer that you would know the light of Christ guiding and leading you, bringing the love and peace of God.
